Painted Veils by John Ashcroft
In his 80s, John's works express something of his earlyl upbringing in war-torn Europe in which death, poverty and suffering was a co-existent reality of life. As a sculptor, his works for the exhibition go beyond the two-dimensional limits of the canvas to create a space that is both physical and conceptual. The works are mainly organic and often unrecognisable with their folds and valleys, but enriched with strong primary colours, slightly reminscent of the Baroque.
