Claudia Terstappen’s latest photographic exhibition 'Love, Fear and Devotion’ gives insights into the diverse cultural expressions of worship, faith and memory in Indonesia, Mexico and Thailand. Terstappen is interested in superstitions, beliefs and ceremonies and is fascinated by the way people express these through objects, images and rituals in their daily life. After travels throughout Indonesia, Mexico and Thailand, Terstappen captures places and objects as 'cultural actors' and makes socio-cultural connections visible through lens-based media. Born in Germany, Terstappen studied German Literature and Philosophy as well as sculpture and photography and now has over twenty years experience as a professional artist with an impressive list of international exhibitions, awards and publications.

Monet’s Garden: The Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris, represents the largest collection of works by Monet ever to come to Australia. The exhibition will feature more than sixty works devoted to Claude Monet’s iconic garden at Giverny and trace the evolution of these garden motifs over a period of twenty years. It reveals the transition of Monet’s purely Impressionist style to the more personal pictorial idiom that he adopted in later life. The exhibition includes a series of rarely seen late works by Monet; some of the last easel paintings created in the garden in Giverny as the artist began to lose his sight. These works represent a radical departure from Monet’s earlier style and will provide visitors to the exhibition with the unique opportunity to explore a lesser known period in the artist’s life.

Peter James Smith’s work covers a wide range of interlinking topics and approaches to themes around beauty, time, space, history and perception. Exploring the terrain where contemporary depictions of the sublime intersect with science, Smith’s work often sees breathtakingly romantic landscapes overlaid with related notes, jottings, and equations. By subtly altering the surface or context of his found or painted objects, Smith infuses the past with a new visual language and cultural meaning, rendering it as potent as the present. Catch the artist’s current exhibition at Flinders Street Gallery until May 25.
