Mark Kimber

John Buckley Gallery

Mark Kimber is an Australian photo-based artist and a full-time staff member of the SA School of Art, University of South Australia. Kimber’s latest works depict miniature worlds unto themselves: mythic moments frozen in time. Sealed from the world, Kimber’s diorama’s possess an eerie melancholy. Untouchable and frozen, like dreams slightly out of reach. Kimber’s work is held in many major collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, Artbank, and the National Portrait Gallery. ‘All that Glisters’ is showing at John Buckley Gallery until August 14. Mark Kimber is also represented by Stills Gallery in Sydney.

Tamara Dean is interested in documenting subcultures, social rituals those existing on the cultural fringe. ‘This Too Shall Pass’ is a richly imaginative journey. Urban waifs cavort in semi decay, conjuring wildness on the fringes of urban space. Dean’s subjects inhabit a world we can recognise but not locate. With eyes locked in a direct gaze, her gypsy’s dare us to join them. Dean works as a photographer for The Sydney Morning Herald, and studied photography at the College of Fine Arts and the University of Western Sydney. Showing until August 9.

Dan O’Day’s photographs possess a profound stillness. Utilising medium format film and dramatic lighting, O’Day’s works suggest either early morning or late evening, times when the quiet and being in the present moment are most pronounced. O’Day conjures what it means to be alone, falling through time and space unnoticed. A professional artist since 2002, O’Day has held a number of solo exhibitions, and has been the recipient of numerous art awards, including the Canberra Critics Circle 2007 Photographic Award and most recently, a finalist in the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize.
