I regularly paint myself into a corner, but never wondered why anyone would be painting the floor to do so. The sticky stuff we make pictures with doesn’t always make perfect sense either. Paint the town red with this week’s art features!

    SIMON COLLINS
Frances Keevil Gallery
A 2008 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize Finalist (touring), and one of 20 selected for ArtMelbourne08's Off the Wall, Simon's practice is described by Louise Paramour - artist and Off The Wall Judge, 'The dark streetscape paintings of Simon Collins are highly accomplished works of art - beautiful and engaging. This artist has a natural affinity with the substance of oil paint as well as a deep understanding of darkness, light and movement.' His work will be exhibited in his solo show July 25 to August 6 at Frances Keevil Gallery, Double Bay, Sydney.

    ANNE-THERESE KAYE
The paintings of Anne-Therese Kaye are fluid, moving in both content and structure. Inspired by the stream of faces and symbols which flow through our lives, Kaye visualizes an interconnected world - without the sugar-coating of a Sony advertisement. Born in England, Kaye lived in France before emigrating to Australia in 1967. She has experienced the breadth of the country from north-west WA to the south of Tasmania. Kaye has been steadily practicing since 1994, initially using watercolours and traditional egg tempera, now working in acrylics and oils.

    JUAN FORD: GRAVITY
03 May 08 - 31 May 08
dianne tanzer gallery
The figures of Juan Ford are draped in gum leaf shadows and cast in cutting-bright sunlight. In ‘A Glitch in the System’ (left) red capsules hover between the green leaves, with a colour theory trick making them appear to vibrate in mid-air. It’s ‘an absurd human solution to any problem. Throw a bunch of pills at a tree…But that’s kinda what we’re doing with the environment.’ (Juan Ford) The natural environment is fighting back before it becomes a memory.
