Jane Becker Profile

Jane Becker is a Sydney artist who has been exhibiting artwork since graduating from COFA in the mid 80's.

Her career highlight was winning the 2005 Art Gallery Society of NSW Award for Sculpture by the Sea, for her work "My Queer House", selected by the Director of the AGNSW, Mr Edmund Capon. After teaching visual arts in NSW high schools for 6 years, Jane spent about a decade working in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Workshop in various roles, including Workshop & Design Manager, and Art Director. After peaking her major events career at the 2002 Gay Games as Design Director - Ceremonies, she has moved back to her own studio practice, supplementing regular exhibitions with work as a storyboard artist, illustrator, mural painter, and scenic designer and artist. "I like to think about lots of different things in my work. Key explorations are relationships to animals, to my interior self, and to my sense of place in the world. I use photography, painting and sculpture to muddle through these ideas, often using miniatures or an unexpected scale to shift the viewer's position."
